About Me
I am an experienced teacher new to Ottawa. I have had eight years work experience as an elementary school teacher in Ontario and 1.5 year as an Occasional Teacher with the OCDSB. I am dedicated to professional learning. I have completed Additional Qualification courses for Special Education (Specialist), Reading (Specialist) and Physical Health and Education (Intermediate ABQ). Recently, I completed PQP 1 with the Ontario Principal Council to broaden my perspective of education and intend to complete part 2 this spring. In addition, I have academic training in social development studies and was employed as a Child and Youth worker for the Waterloo Region Family and Children Services for two years.
I encourage and nurture creativity of learners by designing learning tasks dedicated to inquiry-based learning. I focus on open-ended critical questioning grounded in the big ideas embedded in the Ontario Curriculum. I have attended several conferences and workshops to cultivate this teaching style (ex., Going Green, OTF). These tools enable me to design tasks with differentiation in mind, providing a range of targeted entry points for different learning needs, and diverse opportunities for students to show learning.
I was part of the Books of Life project (####-##) funded by the Ontario Teacher’s Federation and Aboriginal Education Office. Through this experience, I enhanced my own knowledge of Aboriginal culture (building my individual capacity), while networking with teachers and students from different regions of Ontario to enhance student learning. As a component of the Books of Life project, my grade 3 classroom collaborated with students from two other schools in Ontario to publish three books. We used 21st century learning tools (iPads, netbooks, and blogging) to facilitate connections with our partnered classrooms by blogging together to learn about different cultures and traditions. This opportunity provided a unique perspective of the diverse learning types and cultivated a team spirit toward an important goal.
I continue to build on my knowledge of best practices in my teaching with professional reading and learning networks. I had ongoing training in differentiated instruction, universal design and authentic assessment with C-ILM and TLCP collaborations and learning cycles. The focus was math problem solving as well as various writing genres. This planning also reinforced my teaching strategy to deliver timely feedback and assessment for learning based on learning goals and success criteria originating from big ideas and student inquiry. During learning cycles, I focus on moderation of student work and assessment to focus my instruction based on student need.
In 2011 and 2012, I was a member of the school success planning team. I worked directly with my supervisor and colleagues to develop a collective capacity for educating students in our school. I attended conferences and workshops on Critical Thinking and Questioning (ex., An evening with Garfield Gini-Newman), which became the focus of our school planning and collaboration. Our planning team created learning opportunities during monthly staff meetings that highlighted the WRDSB best practices, authentic learning tasks and high-yield instructional strategies.
I focus on the diversity of needs and incorporate multiple entry points in my planning. I have classroom experience teaching kindergarten to Grade 8, in all subject areas. I have 7 years experience differentiating for English as a second language, students with individualized education plans, and from families with diverse cultural and religious belief systems. I have experience incorporating these diverse learning needs into my daily lesson plans and unit planning with success, by differentiating for all learning styles and needs. I am confident I could successfully integrate these skills in your school.
While working as an Occasional Teacher with OCDSB I have spent a large portion of my time working in LRT/LST roles. Developing my ability to identify and differentate for a wide range of student needs for all grade ranges. I consistently receive longer term Occasional Teaching positions (1.5 months at Stittsville PS) based on positive feedback received and the quality learning relationships I make with staff and students. In this role, I am able to contiually focus on immediate feedback for next steps and celebrating student strengths.
